“The treasure we most desire,” wrote Joseph Campbell, “is hidden in the cave we most fear.” Heroes enter caverns, forests, and underworlds to find not punishment, but transformation. Beginning on April 6 , join Mythologist Scott Bryson as we explore why descent — into darkness, confusion, and the unknown — is essential to psychological and creative life.
Drawing on Campbell, Jung, and poet Robert Bly, we’ll examine descent myths —from Persephone and Orpheus to Into the Woods — and ask how facing our monsters reveals hidden aspects of the self. We’ll trace Ariadne’s thread as a model for inner navigation: how to hold something steady while moving through uncertainty. Through storytelling, literary analysis, and psychological reflection, students will gain interpretive tools for reading myth and symbol, and learn to connect ancient narratives of descent to personal experiences of loss, creativity, and renewal.
