In the final weeks of World War II, two African American soldiers, Technical Sergeant William E. Thomas and Private First Class Joseph Jackson, posed for a now‑famous photograph taken during Easter of 1945. Though officially part of the 333rd Field Artillery Battalion, they were serving with the 969th Artillery Battalion at the time.
Like many artillerymen, they scrawled humorous or defiant messages on their shells, a small act of morale‑boosting rebellion as they faced the brutal final push against Nazi Germany. Their handwritten “Easter eggs” were meant for Hitler, a darkly comic gesture in a war that had taken a heavy toll on everyone involved.
