Very sad news: Éva Keleti, a legend in Hungarian photo history passed away today at the age of 95. Her impact on Hungarian photography is hard to overestimate. She created a whole new approach to theatre photography, she worked at many magazines both as a photographer, an editor and of course: always as a mentor who was able to teach and influence so many talents. She was a wonderful, cheerful, energetic person all her life. We'll always remember her fondly. May she rest in peace!

About her:
Éva Keleti was born in 1931 in Budapest into a middle class Jewish family. Her father was working in a bank while her mother ran the household. In 1936 the family decided to get christianized, so Éva received a catholic education. The brother of her mother, Endre Kabos was an Olympic gold medalist in fencing. In 1944 her father was sent to a labour camp, while she and her mother was directed into a brick factory. They luckily escaped deportation.
.
She studied physics and chemistry in the university, but left school and dedicated her life to photography. She studied photo journalism under Ernő Vadas and Klára Langer, both big names in photography. She worked as a reporter for Magyar Fotó (Hungarian Photo) from 1954 to 1976. Between 1976 and 1989 she worked as the photo journalist, an editor and photo editor for Új Tükör (New Mirror), then she became the photo editor of a magazine about theatre. In the '90s, she worked as a photo editor for various outlets.
.
She was also a regular member of the World Press Photo and Interpress jury.
She originally wanted to be a ballet dancer, but she had much more talent in photography, so eventually she became an avid dance and theater photographer.
At the age of 60, according to her decision made long before, she finished her photographic career but stayed active in the industry. She founded a photo agency and contributed a lot to the management of the legacies of famous photographers. At the age of 88 in 2019, she suddenly decided to grab the camera again after 30 years and started photographing famous people, friends, family and her subjects from the past. She was an active organizer, participant and member of the Hungarian photo scene until the very end. She will be greatly missed.
