Between 1973-1985, Manx photographer Chris Killip recorded working class communities in the northeast of England as deindustrialization shifted the world they knew. These images became his acclaimed 1988 book, In Flagrante.
While living in Newcastle, Killip immersed himself in the communities he photographed, valuing their lives with a benevolent attention. He portrayed both their struggles and kinship as the industrial landscape changed around them.
“I’m not an historian, and these people will never appear in history books, because ordinary people don’t,” he said. “History is done to them, it’s not acknowledged that they make history.”
The second photo in this carousel will be available as a 6x6” Square Print in Odyssey, the upcoming Square Print Sale in partnership with The Photographers' Gallery, from March 23-29.
