Japanese Woodblock Print — Teranishi Kanshin at Odai, from the Sixty-Nine Stations of the Kisokaidō by Utagawa Kuniyoshi (1852)
Kuniyoshi portrays the swordsman Teranishi Kanshin standing in composed stillness, quietly opening a folding fan. His robe, covered with striking skeleton motifs, surrounds the figure with imagery that reflects the ever-present awareness of death within the world of warriors and outlaws.
At his feet appears Nagamatsu, the son of the famed Edo figure Banzui Chōbei, presented upon a chopping board in a tense theatrical gesture. The scene plays upon a witty Edo pun linking the place name Odai with the word for a chopping board.
Through symbolism and wordplay, Kuniyoshi reveals the dramatic spirit of Edo storytelling.
