Tributes to Lennon covered up in Prague

PRAGUE — A colorful wall dedicated to the memory of John Lennon has been covered with paint, leaving a single message: “Wall is over!”
The wall, at the heart of the Czech Republic capital in the picturesque Little Quarter neighborhood, began to be painted with Lennon images and related graffiti after his slaying in 1980.
It became a symbol of freedom and of opposition to communism, and young people were drawn there to light candles and leave flowers.
After the anti-communist Velvet Revolution in 1989, the wall turned into a tourist attraction.
Messages in support of democratic protests in Hong Kong appeared recently on the wall, while another tribute wall sprang up in Hong Kong itself.
A group of art students claimed responsibility for painting the wall white and leaving the message, an apparent play on the Lennon hit Happy Xmas (War Is Over).
The students did so, the Prague Service group said in a statement, to mark the 25th anniversary on Monday of the Velvet Revolution — which ended communist rule in Czechoslovakia — and “provide free space for new messages of the current generation.”
New messages, such as “The wall is never over,” immediately started to appear there.
