MKK_000 BENNINGTON 1953 / KÜRBLA 2024

Grandma Moses' painting of Bennington is notable for its mixing and matching of space and time. Near the center of the painting Moses depicted the distinctive Bennington Museum building, gray with white columns, as it looked in 1953. Yet, she included horse-drawn vehicles in the foreground, which would have been replaced by motorized vehicles long before then. Right next to the museum, Moses painted a slender version of the Bennington Battle Monument, which is located a half mile up the hill. Not concerned with "accuracy," as traditionally defined, Moses depicted Bennington as it appeared in her mind’s eye, filtered through memory and using two iconic structures to anchor the painting’s composition and make the scene readily recognizable to anyone familiar with the town.
