This painting illustrates a brutal spectacle ordered by Emperor Nero, where a young Christian woman is martyred by being tied to a bull, mirroring the mythological punishment of Dirce, the queen of Thebes. Siemiradzki's work reflects the 19th-century fascination with ancient history and the persecution of early Christians.
