In Latvian folklore, the rooster is a symbol of light. Ancient tales say that witches and devils are scared of roosters' songs and will pass by their homes. Wooden and metal roosters have been guarding houses in Riga since the end of the 13th century. The rooster of St. Peter's Church rises the highest in the city – 123 metres.
