In another move in the District of Columbia by President Donald Trump, he’s planning to ask Congress for $2 billion to improve conditions in Washington, D.C. He said Congress will do it.
This comes just months after D.C. faced an unprecedented budget crisis after Congress cut $1.1 billion of D.C residents' tax dollars that were already allocated in the D.C. budget. It led to city-wide protests. The cut forced more than $400 million in cuts to essential resources and agencies in the District.
“Now it's going to be clean,” President Trump said. “I'm giving out a contract very soon. Suzy’s with me where we're going to be raising about $2 billion from Congress, and Congress is happy to do it. We're going to wisely spend the money we're doing with block construction.”
The President said the effort to beautify D.C. would focus on a 3-mile radius of the White House and U.S. Capitol.
“All those light bulbs. Well, you see the poles there. They're rusting, and they got different lenses on top if you look,” President Trump said. “So many different problems, and we’re going to have this place beautified.”
The President also zoomed in on redoing the roads. City council and the D.C. mayor have said that giving back the billion dollars of residents' tax dollars would beautify D.C. by funding enhancements to public safety and community services.
“And then the big question is, 'How long do we stay?' Because if we stay, we want to make sure it doesn't come back. So, we have to take care of these criminals and get them out of here,” Trump said.
The President claims this will be done within a year. He didn’t specify where Congress would move the $2 billion from. However, in the spring after the billion dollars from D.C.’s budget was taken, the Senate approved a bill to give it back; the president also supported it, but it never happened.
