" One thing missing from the Statue and pedestal at its debut was the famous plaque with a poem from Emma Lazarus. She wrote the sonnet as part of the fundraising effort, and it was added in 1903.
“‘Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!’ cries she
With silent lips. ‘Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
