PARAPOLITIKA.GR: KUSHNER INVESTMENT IN ALBANIA SPARKS ATHENS PROTEST RALLY

Albanian migrants and environmental activists protest in Athens against Jared Kushner’s luxury resort project in Albania’s protected coastal areas.

Crowds gathered in Syntagma Square on Saturday afternoon, June 6, to express their protest against the pending investment by Jared Kushner for a tourist resort in a protected area of Albania, which has led to widespread incidents.

/.../ “The scenario is well-known and repeated in many parts of the Balkans. Public land is given away to foreign and local ‘strategic investors’, who promise jobs at the expense of nature and local property owners,” they characteristically state.

They even denounce that “Albanian and foreign oligarchs, mafiosos, property title forgers and corrupt government agents, with the assistance of directed media, attempt to baptize destruction as showcasing natural beauty,” while deploying conspiracy theories in Albanian media about “demonstrations instigated by foreign (Greek or Serbian) fingers.” Those gathered warmly thanked, from the podium, the Greek citizens and migrants from other countries who were present in Syntagma

Kushner investment in Albania sparks Athens protest rally

Albanian migrants and environmental activists protest in Athens against Jared Kushner’s luxury resort project in Albania’s protected coastal areas.

Crowds gathered in Syntagma Square on Saturday afternoon, June 6, to express their protest against the pending investment by Jared Kushner for a tourist resort in a protected area of Albania, which has led to widespread incidents. The Albanian Migrants Initiative was the one that made the call. Unions and associations from Greece were present, as well as migrant associations and other collectives. The main message sent by the protesters is “Neither land nor water – No to selling out our land and ecological destruction for oligarchs’ profits”. As those gathered denounce from the protest podium, the Albanian government is proceeding with a systematic sellout and destruction of one of Europe’s most important coastal habitats. Moreover, they speak of another tourism project, which they denounce has been proceeding arbitrarily since late April, without any environmental impact studies, without permits and with the cover of the Rama government, which at the same time provides misleading explanations to the Albanian parliament.

Albania: Resort in protected areas

The destruction, according to the Initiative, is located in the Pishë Poro-Narta Protected Area and within the Vjosa-Narta Protected Landscape, which forms part of the Vjosa river delta, Europe’s last wild river. In this area, the construction of a luxury resort has been planned, which is financially supported by Jared Kushner (Donald Trump’s son-in-law), with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama having officially confirmed the connection of the works to this specific project.

The protesters in Syntagma tell Orange Press Agency that hundreds of citizens in Albania who attempted to protest peacefully in the field faced violent suppression by thugs, while barbed wire has now been placed that blocks public access to the coastline. At the same time, they remind that thousands of people continue to demonstrate in the streets of Tirana.

The Initiative explains that the legal window opened in February 2024, when the Albanian government amended the law on protected areas, allowing concrete development in strict protection zones, something also experienced by residents of the village Rrjoll in northern Albania. “The scenario is well-known and repeated in many parts of the Balkans. Public land is given away to foreign and local ‘strategic investors’, who promise jobs at the expense of nature and local property owners,” they characteristically state.

They even denounce that “Albanian and foreign oligarchs, mafiosos, property title forgers and corrupt government agents, with the assistance of directed media, attempt to baptize destruction as showcasing natural beauty,” while deploying conspiracy theories in Albanian media about “demonstrations instigated by foreign (Greek or Serbian) fingers.” Those gathered warmly thanked, from the podium, the Greek citizens and migrants from other countries who were present in Syntagma.
