The painting illustrates a fragment of the Gospel of John where the recently risen Christ addresses Mary Magdalene in the following words: “Noli me tangere” (Latin: Touch me not; John 20:17). The encounter took place in front of the tomb of Jesus, whom Mary Magdalene initially mistook for a gardener. In the painting, Jesus bows his head while the kneeling Mary Magdalene is holding a clay vessel in her left hand. Christ is dressed in a red garment and he is wearing a flat-brimmed hat. In the background, there is a rose garden, the open tomb (shown as a stone edifice), and on the horizon, far away from the city, the Mount of Olives.

The painting is on display on the south wall of the upper chancel of the Holy Sepulchre Basilica and it is framed in wood, adorned with late-Baroque gilded ornaments.
