Shepard (Ernest Howard). A Winnie-the-Pooh illustrated letter, 23 March 1935
Sold for £12,500
Shepard (Ernest Howard, 1879-1976). An illustrated autograph letter, Long Meadow, Longdown, Guildford, 23 March 1935, written by Shepard with deliberate misspellings in the guise of Winnie the Pooh and Piglet, to 'Buffkins' and apologising that they are unable to come to his (birthday) party as they shall be away, before concluding, 'Thank you so much for inviteing us', incorporating a pen and ink drawing of the tearful Pooh and Piglet between salutation and 7-line message, blue ink on embossed letterhead, minor creasing along upper margin, 1 page, 8vo
(Quantity: 1)
Buffkins was the childhood nickname of the humanist Dr Harry Stopes-Roe (1924-2014), whose mother, the birth control pioneer Marie Stopes (1880-1958), was a close friend of the illustrator. Shepard would often attend Buffkins' birthday parties, but when he couldn't he would send one of these letters of apology. The letter is being sold by the children of Harry Stopes-Roe and his wife Mary, née Wallis (1927-2019), herself the daughter of the illustrious scientist, engineer and inventor Sir Barnes Neville Wallis (1887-1979).
