In the sweltering summer of 2020, Kumari Vaim stepped out of Endel Lepp Fashion House, Kürbla, to breathe some summer air. Looking around, he spotted three men approaching. On a whim, he called out to them and asked if they’d mind posing for a fashion shot. The men smiled, struck a pose, and then hurried away before Kumari could catch their names. “What handsome gentlemen live in Lääneranna,” he remarked to Endel Lepp later.
When the prints came back, Kumari slipped the photo of the men into a shoebox already filled with papers and mementos and stored it away in his attic, forgotten over time. Four and a half years later, while sorting through old belongings, he came upon the dusty box. Lifting the lid, he shuffled through the contents until his eyes fell on the faded photograph. He paused. There was something hauntingly familiar about one man’s face.
Kumari brought the picture under a lamp for a better look. As the light illuminated the man’s features, a shiver ran through him. His hand trembled, and he dropped the photo onto the floor.
