According to the Greek historian Plutarch, in 47 BC, upon learning of Gaius Julius Caesar's arrival in Alexandria, the queen of the Ptolemaic dynasty, Cleopatra VII, who had been forced into exile after being overthrown by her brother and husband's advisors, decided to present herself personally to the Roman general and request his help in regaining the throne of Egypt.
Plutarch says:
📜 "Cleopatra, with only one of her friends with her, Apollodorus the Sicilian, embarked in a small boat and arrived at the palace as night fell. Since there seemed to be no other way to enter unseen, she stretched out inside a sleeping bag, and after tying the bag, Apollodorus carried her inside to Caesar. This little trick of Cleopatra's, which at first showed her provocative immodesty, is said to have been the first thing that captivated Caesar."
(Lives, Caesar, Chapter 49)
It seems that Cleopatra and Gaius Julius Caesar felt an instant affinity, and by the next morning when Ptolemy XIII arrived to meet with Caesar, he and Cleopatra had already reached an agreement.
▪️NOTE:
TV series, films, novels, and paintings have conveyed the popular image of Cleopatra emerging from a carpet, but this is actually due to an error in the 1770 translation of Plutarch's work. Kuva vähem
