Happy Natura2000 Day! We have so much to learn from nature

Today, we celebrate the 27 000 nature sites protected by EU legislation across Europe.

protects 1,389 animal and plant species and 233 habitat types.

Natura 2000 sites reflect Europe’s rich variety of wildlife and habitats. They cover almost 1/5 of land and 1/10 of surrounding seas - which is about the size of Spain and Italy combined.

Despite some positive results of conservation action in recent years, the latest assessments of habitats and species in Europe show worrying results.

81% of habitats and 63% of species have a poor or bad conservation status in Europe.
