John Stink, known in Osage as Ho-Tah-Moie or “Rolling Thunder,” was a man straddling two worlds. Born into the sacred Thunder Clan in Kansas, he was relocated to the Osage reservation in 1872. Despite acquiring wealth from oil, he chose solitude, living in a simple shack with his dogs and rejecting the house assigned to him in 1906, calling it “disgusting.” He spoke only Osage and visited only those who could understand him, maintaining a life apart from modern society.
Legends surrounded John Stink, blending fact and folklore. He was once thought dead from the cold but revived by Catholic nuns, and another time he was buried on Bacon Rind Hill only to reappear in town, giving rise to ghostly tales. When two of his dogs were killed by police, he withdrew permanently into the hills, further cementing his reputation as a mysterious, almost spectral figure in Osage history.
Despite his reclusiveness, John was generous, donating to churches and veterans. He lived through remarkable historical moments—from Geronimo’s surrender and the Osage oil boom to the advent of airplanes, telephones, and World War I. When he died in 1938 at age 75 and was buried in Pawhuska, he left behind not just wealth, but a legend: a man who lived as if the old spirits still walked the land. Kuva vähem
