"It was a physical conversation happening in paint instead of words." - Keith Haring on the friendship and collaboration between Jean-Michel Basquiat and Andy Warhol.
It started with curiosity - an introduction through a mutual friend - and quickly became one of the most iconic friendships in art history. Basquiat and Warhol found common ground in their creativity, their circles, and their place in the downtown NYC art scene.
Within a year, they were painting together, making portraits of one another, and sharing an intense, creative bond that played out in studios, galleries, and headlines. For a few brief years, they were inseparable - pushing boundaries, influencing each other, and leaving their mark on a cultural moment that still echoes today.
But like many stories rooted in brilliance, theirs had a tragic end. A falling out, no closure - and then, Warhol’s sudden death. Basquiat followed just 18 months later.
Their friendship was layered, complicated, and deeply human. These photos offer a glimpse into that rare connection and a singular moment in time.
