On this day in 1961, the Pacific Electric, a/k/a the “Red Car” system, ceased operations. A feature of the LA cityscape for many decades, including in many noir films, Pacific Electric was, at its peak in the 1920s, the largest electric railway system in the world, linking communities through Southern California. It was replaced by the freeway system, and the machinations behind its replacement would make a good subject for a noir.
