Danish World War II drama Woman Unknown, directed by May el-Toukhy, won the Golden Lion for Best Film at the Venice Film Festival. The film follows a woman trying to hide a past relationship with a Nazi and was the only competition feature directed solely by a woman.

The festival also honored South Korean filmmaker Lee Chang-dong, Russian-born director Ilya Khrzhanovsky, veteran actor John Malkovich and newcomer Mathilde Arcel, while Israeli documentary NAZA received the Special Jury Prize.

* Silver Lion (Grand Jury Prize): Possible Love – Lee Chang-dong (South Korea)
* Best Director: Ilya Khrzhanovsky – DAU
