This scene depicts Martin, a Roman officer, encountering a freezing beggar at the city gates of Amiens, Gaul, during a night patrol. Having nothing left to give, Martin cuts his military coat in two with his sword and gives one half to the beggar. The following night, Martin dreams of seeing Jesus Christ wearing the half of the coat he had given. This vision strengthens Martin's faith and leads him to be baptized, ultimately leaving the military life to dedicate his life to God.
