In the early 1960s, the FBI was determined to stop Martin Luther King Jr. and the civil rights movement. In 1964, the agency even sent him a letter — claiming to be from a Black activist — that threatened to expose his extramarital affairs with the help of secret tape recordings. The letter also encouraged him to kill himself.
