Leo Tolstoy, the giant of Russian literature, absolutely adored Chekhov as a person but thought his plays were garbage.
Once, while Chekhov was recovering from an illness, Tolstoy leaned in and whispered: "You know, I cannot abide Shakespeare, but your plays are even worse."
Despite the roast, Tolstoy considered Chekhov the "Pushkin of prose" and wept when he died, calling it an "irreparable loss."
