The Ghost of Oiwa
Kuniyoshi prints from the Noguchi Collection - We just purchased an incredible group of Kuniyoshi prints from the Tsuyoshi Noguchi collection. Noguchi-san was avid Tokyo collector of historic Edo era prints. His primary interest was classic folklore and legendary heroes of Japan. The Kuniyoshi portion of his collection was especially well regarded and the central focus of his collecting over 50 years. Some of Kuniyoshi’s most dramatic and fantastic prints are among those we will be offering from this stunning collection over the next few weeks.
A tip for the serious collector - Look for Kuniyoshi masterpieces from the Noguchi collection in our auctions through the end of October and throughout November. This will be key offering in our 2010 line up and a choice opportunity for the discerning collector. Don’t miss out!
Comments - Fantastic woodblock from one of the most famous Japanese ghost stories of all time, "Yotsuya Kaidan," a tale of betrayal, murder, and ghostly revenge. The ronin Tamiya Iemon attempts to kill his wife, Oiwa, by poisoning her, but the poison instead disfigures her. In an attempt to make herself presentable, she combs her hair, but the hair comes out in clumps, dripping blood onto the floor. When she finally sees her horrible face in the mirror, she dies, cursing Iemon, and returns as a ghost to haunt him. In the famous hair combing scene, Oiwa stands before an overturned screen, clutching a hank of hair, the blood pouring down onto the screen. Her hideous blue face is misshapen and her head is bald on top where the hair has fallen out. A terrified man crouches behind her, unable to believe his eyes, a sword stuck into the wooden frame just above his head. A terrific design from this classic tale, detailed with soft shading along the top edge and fine wood grain impression. A great choice for a collector interested in the supernatural.

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. A few small holes repaired from reverse. Some minor thinning. Trimmed as shown. Slight paper remnants on reverse. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
