The Ghost of Asakura Togo, 1851 

Comments - Fantastic scene from the kabuki play "Higashiyama sakura zoshi" (The Higashiyama Storybook), based on a true story. A local mayor named Asakura Togo (the real-life Kiuchi Sogoro) petitioned the shogun directly for tax relief for his town, bypassing the crooked governor Hotta Masanobu (Orikoshi in the play). As a result of his illegal act, both he and his wife were sentenced to die, and returned as ghosts to haunt Orikoshi. At left, Ichikawa Kodanji IV appears as the ghost of Shingo Asakura, kneeling with a bloody throat and hands out. At right, Ichikawa Kodanji IV portrays the ghost of Asakura Togo, gripping the sword of Orikoshi, played by Bando Hikosaburo IV. At left, the grain of a wooden panel transforms into a ghastly skull attached to a swooping cloth, with a ghostly gray figure waiting in the doorway. An incredible image from this famous tale, and a great subject for a collector interested in traditional ghost stories.

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Two separate panels. Some rubbing and soiling at edges. A few small holes repaired from reverse. A few creases in subject. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
