🎨 "The Taking of the Temple at Delphi by the Gauls" by Alphonse Cornet (1885)
🏛️ Location: Private Collection
🔍 The Story Behind This Painting
This is a moment of sheer terror, chaos, and divine wrath. In "The Taking of the Temple at Delphi by the Gauls," Alphonse Cornet brings to life the legendary attack on the Oracle of Delphi in 279 BCE, when Celtic warriors, driven by greed and ambition, attempted to plunder the sacred temple of Apollo.
At the center of the composition, ghostly, towering figures rise from the ruins—spirits of divine vengeance summoned to defend their sanctuary. Their spectral forms, wreathed in an ethereal glow, contrast with the blood and carnage below. The Gauls, once fearless, are now gripped by horror. Some flee in terror, while others—too late to escape—are caught in the temple’s supernatural retribution.
The brutality of the battle is evident. A warrior triumphantly lifts a head, yet even his victory is overshadowed by the celestial rage above. The temple, engulfed in fire and chaos, becomes a battleground between the mortal and the divine.
