In 2002, Martin Schoeller was hired by *The New Yorker* to photograph Robin Williams, and he quickly realized that Williams' physical comedy style would be central to his vision. Schoeller came up with the idea of capturing Williams swinging from a chandelier in a grand hotel room, believing it would perfectly embody the actor's energetic comedic spirit. However, knowing that publicists typically reject such bold ideas, Schoeller kept the plan to himself and rigged a chandelier at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in preparation for the shoot.
When Robin Williams arrived at the hotel and saw what was planned, he revealed that he had recently undergone surgery and could no longer perform such a physically demanding stunt. He had an enormous scar on his shoulder, and although he was disappointed by his inability to follow through, he was genuinely apologetic. Despite his limitations, Williams' enthusiasm and willingness to help made an impact, as he wanted to contribute to Schoeller's creative vision in any way possible.
In the end, the situation led to an unexpected twist. Rather than having Williams swing from the chandelier, a hotel maid was asked to step in for the shot. Williams, ever the professional, sat calmly with a newspaper, and the resulting image, which was less about physicality and more about understated humor, turned out to be even more powerful than initially imagined. This moment exemplified Williams' humility and his ability to embrace the unexpected, all while maintaining a warm connection with everyone around him. Kuva vähem
