"Beauties at Hina Matsuri Doll Festival" by Mizuno Toshikata (1866–1908), japanese woodblock print, Meiji period.
Hina Matsuri (or Doll Festival or Girl’s day) is celebrated on March 3rd all over Japan. On this day, families wish their daughters a successful and happy life.
Homes with girls display “hina-ningyo” which are special dolls for Hinamatsuri. Delicate peach blossoms are displayed next to them. The dolls are usually arranged on a five (or sometimes seven) tiered stand covered with a red cloth. At the top are the Emperor and Empress, with three court ladies on the next step, followed by five musicians, two ministers, and three servants on the bottom row. There are also small pieces of furniture, small meal dishes, and other things displayed amongst them. Sometimes in smaller homes, to save space, only the Emperor and the Empress dolls are displayed. These often expensive sets are handed down through the generations.
