Nearly 2,000 years after the Roman historian Suetonius wrote "The Lives of the Caesars" in the second century C.E., his work has now hit the bestseller list. Tom Holland, the author and history podcast host who translated the text for this new edition, described it as "a very highbrow gossip column." It covers the scandals of Julius Caesar and the first 11 Roman emperors, from Tiberius' sexual abuse of young boys to Caligula's alleged plans to make his favorite horse consul. When Holland learned that the book is the first hardback Penguin Classic to make the coveted list, he noted that he was "delighted for Suetonius, to see the lad is capable of getting on the bestseller list after two millennia."
