Four rare paintings by 15th-century Renaissance master Antonello da Messina were stolen from the Regional Museum of Messina in Sicily on August 15. Thieves reportedly bypassed the museum’s alarm systems and broke into secure display cases, taking three panels from the Polittico di San Gregorio altarpiece and a fourth double-sided painting depicting the Virgin and Child and Christ. The theft occurred during Italy’s Ferragosto national holiday, a day after Italian police recovered paintings by Cézanne, Renoir and Matisse stolen earlier this year.
