The novel tells the story of Mary Lennox, a spoiled, unloved, and sickly ten-year-old girl who is sent to live with her reclusive uncle, Archibald Craven, at Misselthwaite Manor on the Yorkshire Moors after her parents die in a cholera outbreak in India. The manor is a vast, mysterious place with hundreds of empty rooms, and Mary's uncle is often absent, haunted by the death of his wife ten years prior.
Left to her own devices, Mary begins to explore the estate. She discovers two great secrets. The first is a hidden, walled garden that belonged to her aunt. It has been locked and the key buried since her death. With the help of a friendly robin, Mary finds the key and the hidden door, and she secretly begins to tend to the garden, bringing it back to life.
The second secret is her cousin, Colin Craven, whom she discovers hidden away in a remote room of the manor. He is a hysterical and bedridden boy, convinced he is destined to die of a spinal deformity. Having been indulged and isolated by the servants, he is as tempestuous and lonely as Mary once was.
The story's transformation is driven by nature and friendship. Mary is aided in her gardening by Dickon, a local boy with an almost magical affinity for animals and the natural world. She eventually introduces the sour Colin to the secret garden and to Dickon. As the three children work together to revive the garden, the garden, in turn, works its magic on them. Mary sheds her selfishness and grows strong and healthy. Colin, inspired by the fresh air and the belief that the garden has "magic" that can make him well, learns to walk and abandons his neurotic fears.
The restoration of the garden parallels the healing of the children and, ultimately, the healing of Archibald Craven, who returns home to find his son healthy and the garden—a symbol of his lost love—bursting with life once more.
The Secret Garden is a classic of English children's literature, celebrated for its themes of spiritual and physical healing, the power of positive thought, and the transformative magic of nature, friendship, and kindness.
