The chanoyu or the Japanese tea ceremony is unlike the British afternoon tea. It does not consist of dainty sandwiches, scones and cakes. Higashi (dry sweets) or omogashi (fresh sweets) are consumed before the drinking of green tea (matcha). Guests bring a kaishi, a paper napkin that the sweets are placed on and consumed with a yoji, special eating utensil.
A much simpler affair, the focus is on the atmosphere, serenity and the philosophy of Ichigo-Ichi-e meaning “we can only enjoy the present moment. So let’s try our best.” The tea ceremony usually takes place in a tea house or open garden, with special attention taken by the host to decorate the venue symbolically
