Mario Algaze (1947-2022) is a Cuban-American photographer renowned for his elegant black-and-white images that capture the soul and rhythm of Latin America. Forced into exile from Cuba as a teenager, Algaze found his voice through photography, exploring themes of identity, nostalgia, and cultural connection.
His work often portrays everyday life across Latin American cities — from bustling streets to quiet cafés — revealing beauty in ordinary moments and celebrating the warmth of Latin culture. With a poetic and humanistic eye, Algaze’s photographs bridge documentary realism with fine-art sensitivity.
Throughout his career, he has primarily worked with medium-format film cameras, especially the Hasselblad 500C/M, prized for its sharpness and tonal depth. His mastery of natural light and composition gives his images a timeless, cinematic quality.
