We mourn the passing of Björn Andrésen, a Swedish actor and musician whose work, though relatively infrequent, left a memorable imprint on cinema, including significant contributions to the horror and thriller genres.
While he is perhaps most famously remembered for his breakout, and complicated, role as Tadzio in Luchino Visconti's 1971 classic Death in Venice, his later career saw him lend his distinct presence to darker, more unsettling narratives.
In recent years, his quiet, intense gravitas found a home in modern horror. Fans of the genre will recognize him from his role as an elder in Ari Aster's acclaimed folk horror film, Midsommar (2019). His unforgettable, though brief, appearance was central to one of the film's most shocking and pivotal scenes—an act of ritualistic sacrifice that cemented the film's unsettling atmosphere.
Andrésen also contributed to the thriller/horror sphere with the Danish film Shelley (2016), where he played the character of Leo in a dark story exploring a surrogate pregnancy with sinister, dramatic consequences. These roles, often portraying figures of authority or tradition within bleak, contained, or unsettling environments, showcased a powerful shift from his early fame, using his mature presence to add depth to contemporary genre cinema.
Björn Andrésen's career was a journey that took him from the height of international stardom to finding compelling, meaningful roles later in life. We honor his commitment to the craft and his notable contributions that continue to resonate within the worlds of horror and thriller film.
