In 1987-88, Patrick Zachmann ventured to Kowloon Walled City, a lawless and ungoverned enclave of Hong Kong, dominated by towering residential blocks. Originally a military and governmental center, the walled city was once the most densely populated place in the world before its demolition in 1994, with an estimated 30–50,000 people within its 2.6 hectares.
“When I saw the city from the outside I could not see an entrance; there seemed no way to get in. As I got closer I saw many small alleyways. Inside it was night. No sunlight reached the streets so it was night all day,” Zachmann wrote in Granta.
Guided by a member of a secret society, Zachmann explored the labyrinthine passageways, discovering the dark dealings of some of Kowloon’s residents. “They were businessmen, professionals, but behind those identities they were running illegal activities for rival Triad groups, criminal organizations whose influence spreads throughout the island, and worldwide.”
The series appears in Zachmann's book So Long, China, which won the Prix Nadar in 2016, chronicling three decades of his experience in the country.
