After the liberation of France in 1944, thousands of women who had formed intimate relationships with German soldiers—whether by choice, coercion, or survival—were publicly humiliated in brutal acts of retribution. One of the most striking images from this period shows a woman, believed to be a prostitute who serviced German occupiers, having her head shaved by fellow French citizens. These women were often paraded through the streets, marked as traitors in what became known as the punishment for “horizontal collaboration.”
The term “horizontal collaboration” referred to any romantic or sexual involvement with the enemy, and the public viewed it as a deep betrayal of national loyalty. However, the reality was far more complex. While some women may have engaged willingly, many others did so under duress, or as a desperate means of securing food and safety during the occupation. Paradoxically, such liaisons sometimes hindered the German war effort by redirecting resources, yet the fury of the public often ignored these nuances in favor of scapegoating.
The fallout extended beyond the women themselves. Children born from these relationships were frequently ostracized, denied identity papers, and faced discrimination for years to come. France was not alone in this: similar prejudices were seen in other parts of Europe, including Nazi Germany, where mixed-race children were labeled “the dark shame.” These collective punishments serve as a stark reminder of how war leaves wounds far deeper than the battlefield.
History often remembers the victors, but rarely the women caught in its shadows. Their punishment became a public spectacle, but the truth of their choices—and lack of choices—was far more complicated.
