Making eye contact in NYC’s Times Square, 1980s.
In the 1980s, Times Square was a far cry from the polished tourist destination it is today. The area was infamous for its crime, grime, and sleaze, often described as the heart of New York’s urban decay.
The bright lights and billboards remained, but they illuminated a landscape filled with adult movie theaters, peep shows, strip clubs, and run-down arcades. Prostitution, drug dealing, and petty crime were common, and the atmosphere was tense even during the day.
At night, the streets became crowded with hustlers, addicts, and lost tourists, while police struggled to maintain order. The subways nearby were covered in graffiti, and mugging was a real concern. Despite this, the area also had a strange vitality. Street performers, artists, and photographers were drawn to its chaotic energy, capturing a version of New York that was dangerous yet undeniably alive. Kuva vähem
