On This Day In 1970 Jim Morrison was sentenced to Jail!
On October 30, 1970, Jim Morrison was sentenced to six months in jail and a $500 fine for the charges of Indecent Exposure and Open Profanity stemming from The Doors’ performance in Miami, Florida on March 1, 1969. Morrison was freed on a $50,000 pending his appeal. Jim never served the time because he died in Paris in 1971 while the case was under appeal. In 2010, Morrison was unanimously pardoned by the Florida Clemency Board after a request from Governor Charlie Crist.
Background:
During a concert on March 1, 1969, at the Dinner Key Auditorium in Miami, a visibly intoxicated Morrison attempted to spark a riot in the audience, in part by screaming, "You wanna see my cock?" and other obscenities. Three days later, six warrants for his arrest were issued by the Dade County Public Safety Department for indecent exposure, among other accusations. Consequently, many of the Doors' scheduled concerts were canceled.
