In the spring of 1954, Pablo Picasso encountered the young Sylvette David in Vallauris, and she quickly became his muse. Her striking profile, signature high ponytail, and graceful demeanor inspired him to produce a series of more than forty artworks.
The first photograph captures Picasso in his studio with Sylvette David. Relaxed and holding a brush, the artist observes his work while Sylvette poses. Taken by François Pages for Paris Match, the image beautifully conveys the unique connection between the painter and his model.
In the second photograph, shot by Willy Rizzo, Picasso is seen hanging his Portrait of Sylvette David. This rare behind-the-scenes moment offers insight into his creative process, emphasizing not only his artistic vision but also his thoughtful approach to displaying his work.
The third image showcases the finished painting: Portrait of Sylvette David (1954). This oil on canvas, measuring 130.7 x 97.2 cm, belongs to the Art Institute of Chicago’s collection and is displayed in Gallery 390. Donated by Mary and Leigh Block, it remains one of Picasso’s most celebrated portraits from this period.
Sylvette David later pursued her own artistic career under the name Lydia Corbett. Her role as Picasso’s muse left a lasting impact, inspiring a remarkable series of works that continue to be admired around the world.
