#ArtnetNews: Nowadays it would be incomprehensible to use a portrait by Vincent van Gogh to block a hole in a chicken coop, but that’s exactly what the family of one sitter—doctor Félix Rey—did for a decade before sending the artwork to the attic.
Rey met the Dutch Post-Impressionist painter, now one of the world’s most famous and highly sought-after artists but infamously under-appreciated during his lifetime, at the hospital in Arles, France, where Rey was treating him after he severed part of his left ear in December 1888.
