Prince Charles’s right-hand man resigns after 40 years over ‘cash for honours’ scandal 

Michael Fawcett, who has worked beside the prince for four decades, dramatically resigned from his role as CEO of the The Prince’s Foundation last week. Now, police are told to act as new letters confirm aide sought OBE for Saudi donor

Last week Michael Fawcett, the Prince of Wales’ right-hand man and top aide dramatically resigned amid a ‘cash for honours’ inquiry. Fawcett stood down as chief executive of The Prince’s Foundation after questions were raised in the autumn about the awarding of a CBE to Mahfouz Marei Mubarak bin Mahfouz, a Saudi billionaire, in 2016. 

Now, according to leaked letters seen by the Times, Fawcett told a Saudi donor he would be very happy to help him secure an OBE while soliciting a £10 million donation from him that places fresh pressure on Scotland Yard to investigate the scandal. Fawcett is still the subject of a criminal complaint over a suspected breach of the Honours (Prevention of Abuses) Act 1925. The Metropolitan Police first received a complaint more than two months ago but last night told the Times it was still making ‘initial inquiries’, adding: ‘No investigation has been launched.’

It was alleged that Mahfouz had sent thousands of pounds to fixers with links to the Prince of Wales on assurances that he could receive the honour. Mahfouz denies any wrongdoing. Fawcett, who has worked with the Prince of Wales for four decades and who has been accused of offering to help secure a knighthood and British citizenship for Mahfouz, was said to be ‘heartbroken’ and ‘shattered’ by events. 

Fawcett has also had his private contract to organise events for Charles, via his events company Premier Mode, severed. For context, Premier Mode was behind the organisation of Charles and Camilla’s wedding party in 2005. A spokesperson told the Times: ‘Michael Fawcett and Premier Mode will not be providing services to us in the future. We have all agreed to end these arrangements.’ 

The future king’s former valet was considered one of the most powerful and influential figures in the Prince of Wales’ court. Friends have told the Daily Mail that the scandal, which broke in early September, has had a ‘devastating’ effect on Fawcett and he has only now felt well enough to make a decision about his future. They said: ‘Michael has resigned and he will never be coming back. He has lost five stone in weight and is a shadow of his former self.’ A spokesperson for The Prince’s Foundation confirmed his resignation as CEO of the charity on Friday 12 November. 

Fawcett, born in 1962, began working for the Royal family as a footman to the Queen in 1981. He moved to the Prince of Wales’s household and ascended the ranks to become his personal valet. According to the Times, Prince Charles is reported to have once said: ‘I can manage without just about anyone, except for Michael’. His tenure hasn’t been completely plain sailing and this is not the first time he has thrown in the towel. In 1998 he quit after being accused of bullying other staff. He denied the claims and was reinstated as the prince’s personal assistant within a week. In 2003 he resigned again over allegations that he sold unwanted royal presents on behalf of Charles. He was cleared of wrongdoing, although an internal inquiry criticised his running of the household. He is married to a former royal housemaid, Debbie, who helps to run Premier Mode. 

Clarence House said in September, at the time of the allegations, and has now reissued the statement, saying that Charles had ‘no knowledge of the alleged offer of honours or British citizenship on the basis of donation to his charities’. It is understood he was ‘deeply shocked’ by the accusations. 

Fawcett was appointed to the chief executive of Charles’s charity in 2018. He became a ‘fundraiser extraordinaire’, raising millions to support the prince’s philanthropic work. But it was his success in doing so which has ultimately led to his downfall.

Mahfouz has been one of the most prolific donors to the prince’s charities and even has a forest named after him, the Mahfouz Wood at the Castle of Mey, formerly the Queen Mother’s home and now one of the prince’s Scottish residences. His donations of more than £1.5 million helped fund renovations of residences used by Charles, and other charitable ventures.
