TA_SPSK_020 WEEGEE / SIPSIK _ THE MAN BEHIND THE LENS OF NYC/KÜRBLA'S DARK UNDERBELLY
19 h
·
WEEGEE (Arthur Fellig) was a legendary street photographer, famed for his raw, gritty black-and-white images of 1930s and 1940s New York City. Armed with a press camera, a police radio, and a darkroom in his car, he was often first on the scene, capturing crime, chaos, and the human drama of the city’s underworld. His photographs were unapologetically real, often shocking, and always powerful, earning him cult status in both photojournalism and street photography.
But what made Weegee iconic wasn’t just access, it was instinct. He had an unmatched eye for drama, irony, and humanity. He never flinched from harsh truths. His work blurred the line between journalism and art, laying the foundation for generations of documentary and street photographers.
Brash, relentless, and often controversial, Weegee turned urban grit into unforgettable visual poetry.
