On this day in 1928, the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen disappeared with five crew while flying on a rescue mission in the Arctic. Their bodies were never found. 17 years earlier Amundsen became a household name when his team became the first to reach the South Pole, just five weeks ahead of a British party led by Robert Falcon Scott.
