Narges Mohammadi’s autobiography was written in prison and smuggled out in fragments at great risk for all involved.
Mohammadi writes about how the islamist regime and patriarchal tradition intervene in individual lives – and the consequences of refusing to bow to the regime. She shares her experiences as an activist, and reflects upon her role as an activist-mother, which makes it hard to be the mother she wants for her children.
It’s a dramatic and captivating story with harrowing descriptions of violence and oppression. There are heart-wrenching accounts of how the police takes Mohammadi away in front of her crying children, astonishing and at times darkly comical accounts of interactions with the regime’s henchmen, tragic stories about the fate of fellow prisoners and uplifting descriptions of the solidarity between women in confinement.
Above all, this is a story of personal courage, of daring to stand up in the face of harsh repression.
