For several centuries, the Tower of London was home to the Royal Menagerie, a collection of exotic animals which were owned by the monarch, usually having been gifted by foreign leaders. It was one of the earliest forms of what we know as a zoo today.
By the 18th century, the menagerie was opened to the public who could come and marvel at these strange creatures from far-off lands. Some of the animals housed there over its time included lions, elephants, bears, tigers and monkeys.
The entrance fee at that time was three half-pence, or you could visit for free if you brought a cat or dog to feed the lions with.
It was closed in 1832 on the orders of the Duke of Wellington after an incident involving an animal and a Tower guard. Most of the animals were then transported to the newly-opened London Zoo, which still operates today.
