In October 1956, as the esteemed Spanish writer Pío Baroja lay gravely ill due to arteriosclerosis, American author Ernest Hemingway paid him a visit at his Madrid residence. Hemingway, who held Baroja in high regard, presented him with a copy of his novel A Farewell to Arms, inscribed with the dedication: “To you, Don Pío, who taught us so much when we were young and wanted to be writers.”
This meeting was immortalized in a photograph capturing Hemingway seated beside Baroja’s bed, a poignant testament to the mutual respect between the two literary figures. Despite Hemingway’s admiration, Baroja, known for his reserved nature, reportedly remarked after the visit, “Caramba, ¿y a qué viene este tío?” (“Goodness, and why is this guy coming?”). Baroja passed away shortly after, on October 30, 1956. Kuva vähem
