Mario Puzo, the author of The Godfather, had never written a screenplay for a film before. He was just a regular novelist..
When a novel he wrote called The Godfather became a bestseller, Paramount Studios bought the film rights to the book.
Paramount hired a young, unknown director because he said he was willing to work for a small stipend, a paid job. The director's name was Francis Ford Coppola.
After the blockbuster box office success of The Godfather, Hollywood was thinking about a sequel, and they hired Mario to help Francis write the screenplay for the second film.
In fact, Mario did not know how to write a screenplay. Mario, who decided to study screenwriting thoroughly in a short time, took the advice of his friends and went to a bookstore in New York.
