Caspar David Friedrich (1774–1840) Two men contemplating the Moon (detail), 1819 - 20, oil on canvas, 35 × 44.5 cm (13.7 × 17.5 in), Galerie Neue Meister - Staatliche Kunstsammlungen, Dresden, Germany... Pensive foreground figures were among Caspar David Friedrich's favorite motifs. The two men contemplating the sinking moon in this painting have been identified as Friedrich himself, on the right, and his talented young colleague August Heinrich. The mood of pious contemplation relates to fascination with the moon as expressed in contemporary poetry, literature, philosophy, and music. Both figures are seen from the back so that the viewer can participate in their communion with nature, which the Romantics saw as a manifestation of the Sublime. They seem to admire the light of the setting moon, which floats across the night sky. Moonlight shines upon the rocky uphill path that is lined by a fir tree and uprooted dead oak, a large rock, and a broken branch.
