Arturo Ricci (1854–1919) Sala Artistica , 1884, oil on canvas, 106 x 79 cm. (41.7 x 31.1 in.) 'Sala Artistica' from the period of silks and satins gives Ricci the opportunity to show off the full range of his painterly talents and his skill at capturing the lustrous materials of the Rococo in particular, the artist fills his canvas with studio clutter rich in meaning.Taking a break from the job of painting the portrait of a young and beautiful girl, the artist takes his sitter on at chess this time. Behind, watching their every move, is the girl's father. The ruck in the carpet at the artist's feet, the flagrant fan of exotic feathers that thrust up from the vase on the sideboard behind him, and the careless strewing of likenesses of other women from the folder in the lower left corner of the composition point clearly to the painter's inconstant intentions. In turn, the grandiose mirror behind him, the painter's fine frock coat and breeches and his perfectly powdered wig point to his vanity.Judging from his expression, the father is not convinced. The portrait that he has commissioned is unfinished, and hangs apparently discarded at a rakish angle on the wall behind the girl; a paint brush leans provocatively against the canvas. It seems more likely that the father will in fact be paying for a charlatan to take advantage of his daughter than for the completion of a fair and fine likeness. Meanwhile, ignorant to the plot the artist has hatched, and oblivious to her father's concerns, the young sitter surveys the painter with a breathless innocence.
